Special Discounted Opera Tickets for Students

5 October 2010

Students 25 years old or under may benefit from heavily special discounted tickets offered by  the Teatru Astra of Gozo for the upcoming opera production La Traviata, held at the Teatru Astra on Thursday 28th and Saturday 30th October 2010.

The Teatru Astra, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Employment and the Family and Bank of Valletta, is once again repeating this scheme to enable students to familiarise themselves with opera and enjoy the marvellous experience of this beautiful art form. In this way, a new generation of young opera lovers may be fostered. The scheme was initially launched with success in 2008.

200 tickets are thus being made available on a first-come first-served basis to students aged 25 years or under in Malta or Gozo for the first night of the opera production on Thursday 28th October. The tickets have been heavily reduced from the original price of €50 to €10 per student, with any other accompanying adult also benefiting from a 20% discount at the price of €40.

Booking may be done on [email protected]

The Teatru Astra opera production of Verdi’s La Traviata sees a cast of high repute with Gozitan soprano Miriam Cauchi who last year received rave reviews for her interpretation of Gilda in Rigoletto at the Astra, and Italian tenor Alessandro Liberatore, who will be debuting on the local stage, appearing as Violetta and Alfredo respectively. Italian baritone Marco Chingari returns as Germont.

These leading roles will be supported by Georgina Gauci in the role of Flora and Dorienne Portelli in that of Annina. Frans Mangion will sing Gaston, Joseph Lia takes on the role of Barone Douphol, Giampiero Cicino will be the Marchese d'Obigny, Kenneth Scicluna sings the part of Dottore Grenvil, Mario Portelli that of Giuseppe, Violetta’s servant while Armando Tomasello sings the part of the Commisionario.

La Traviata also involves the Teatru Astra Opera Chorus under the direction of resident chorus mistress Maria Frendo. Music director Prof. Mro. Joseph Vella will direct the National Philharmonic Orchestra while Italian stage director of international fame, Marco Gandini, is being entrusted with this production.

The opera production forms part of the ninth edition of Festival Mediterranea. A full list of events is available on this internet portal.

La Traviata and Festival Mediterranea are being organised by volunteers at the Teatru Astra in collaboration with Bank of Valletta, the Malta Tourism Authority, the Vodafone Malta Foundation, the Ministry for Gozo and the Ministry for Finance, the Economy and Investment.
